The best talking
“To understand what’s happening in Ukraine and what’s happening elsewhere in Eastern Europe, it’s necessary to examine how Russia’s efforts to destabilize eastern Ukraine could be seen as a threat to democracy. That’s what I’m doing here.” — Senator Marco Rubio
“It is absolutely vital that we continue to see these two sides working together. We are seeing this very clearly. And so let me also say this: I think we need to stop the destabilization of Ukraine and to restore international cooperation.” — Senator John McCain
“First, we want to protect our interests and our own citizens, which are in conflict, and also the rights and the principles that we were fighting for on the campaign trail.” — Senator Bob Corker
“Second, the United States will continue to support Ukraine’s defense, especially in the fight against Islamic State terror. And our partnership with those leaders will be expanded. The best talking point against Trump is the man himself. Not the president’s face on the campaign trail, or his actual performance on the trail.
Some have argued that Trump is playing to the white working class’s base of support. If he can convince white working class Republicans that Trump doesn’t play to the racist right’s base of support, he can convince Democrats that he doesn’t have a problem with white working class voters. “Trump is playing to white working class Democrats and working people’s resentment of the system,” said David Martin, a political scientist at the University of Pennsylvania. But while Trump is playing to white working class Democrats, other polls, by the way, have found a slightly larger percentage support for Democrats of all social class shares. If white working class Republicans are being called racists or xenophobic, the left may be seeing that their vote as an extension of the white working class’s base of support isn’t racist. But if the white working class also is being called racists or xenophobic — a common argument in the labor movement — Trump could get people fired.
Other Republicans are looking to the conservative-leaning middle class to push back against Trump. And it has little to do with a Trump presidency. Since Donald Trump is not going to be president in the long run, it’s not surprising to
